Partnerships
are working in West Leeds

“Positive” and “enterprising” were
two words describing the many people that visited Sharing
the Success partners at the Bramley Carnival on Sunday. Despite
the rain spirits were not dampened as hundreds turned out
to enjoy the event and hear about what was on offer from the
programme, which is part of the Local Enterprise Growth Initiative.
Partners which work in the West Leeds area
decided that working together was the best way forward at
this event rather than doing things in isolation. ATL (Yorkshire)
Ltd, Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber, West Leeds Enterprise
Centre and Places for People had teams manning the stand throughout
the day – all promoting the free support, workshops
and advice offered by Sharing the Success. Their aim was to
offer an alternative to carnival visitors and search for those
people who were perhaps tired of being ‘sick and tired’,
and wanted to make changes to their lives; possibly through
self-employment or starting a business.
The teams chatted to a host of people who
were also entertained by a stunt show, dancing displays, fun
fair and procession. Ann Crossland from the West Leeds Enterprise
Centre said: “We’ve spoken to a number of positive
and enterprising people today who wanted to find out more.
It’s great to be here. Getting involved in local carnivals
allows people to see that business is not all doom and gloom
at the moment. Working together at this event has also been
really enjoyable.”
Sharing
the Success is a four year, £20.6m government programme
which seeks to develop enterprise, create new jobs and boost
prosperity in some of the city’s most disadvantaged
areas. Simon Brereton programme manager for Sharing the Success
said: “Without collaborative working our programme will
not succeed. It’s wonderful to see the projects in West
Leeds coming together with one message and purpose, and despite
the British summer weather they had the opportunity to speak
to some interesting people with great ideas.”
